The last thing she expects is to run into an old flame, and even worse, the man who broke her heart twelve years ago. She’s sure that the only thing remaining between them is a strong attraction for another.

She can’t be more wrong…

The more time she spends with Vince Reynolds, the more she begins to believe she can trust him again. But, can she put her faith in the one man who captivates her, body and soul, or are some wounds too deep to heal?

Character Interview

Can you tell us who you are?

My name is Dana Nelson. I am a daughter and a lawyer. I represent those who are not given a voice, victims of various crimes.

Can you tell us where you live?

I live in Charlotte, North Carolina, but I am originally from Hertford.

Tell us a little about your story?

I come from a pretty small town. My family owned a farm in Hertford. When I was able to, I left and I haven’t been back since, except to visit my parents now and then.

What do you believe is your strongest trait?

I am loyal to those I love.

And what would be your worst trait?

I guess it’s hard for me to trust these days.

Do you have a love interest in the book?

Vince came into my life rather unexpectedly. He is, as usual, incredibly mysterious and too handsome for his own good.

What is your problem in the story?

Vince. He is always the problem. Ah…I guess that’s not fair to say. He hasn’t hurt me this time. But, my problem is fear, fear that I can’t resist him.

Do you have a hero?

(Blushes.) It was always Vince, wasn’t it? I guess before him and after he hurt me, my dad was my hero. He was strong, always there for me and Mama all those years, and he comforted me after “the incident”.

Do you run from conflict?

Not usually. At least in my profession, I live for it. In my personal life? Not so much. I’ve grown accustomed to uncomplicated relationships. Unfortunately, it’s not that easy with everyone.

Do you have any special weaknesses?

(Laughs.) I have a weakness for my Mama’s home cooking, especially her hot milk cake. I wish I could cook like that!

Is there anything that you are afraid of?

Myself and these feelings Vince stirs within me.

What, if anything, haunts you?

The past. It’s always there, mocking me.

Was there ever a defining moment of your life?

Oh, yes, it had to be that moment when I threw Vince’s signed Panthers football, glass case and all, and it shattered into a hundred pieces. Things were never the same after that.

What is your most prized possession? Why?

I’ve always kept this picture in my photo album. It’s a photo of Vince and me when we were kids. He was pushing me on the tire swing, we were laughing, and my Daddy had a camera on hand. It was just a snapshot, but the picture is pretty worn now. It’s hard not to take it out sometimes and remember how things were.

How do you envision your future?

I think I just want to be happy, whatever that means. I want to live somewhere with people who accept me. I want it to be like when I was a kid again, that unconditional love. Somehow I don’t feel that in Charlotte.
