What are the Mike Beem Chronicles? The Mike Beem Chronicles are a series of short stories that I wrote involving a character called Mike Beem. These stories don’t have to be read in order. I wrote each of them to be their own story. They have an original beginning and a true end. You should be fine reading the current one you are thinking about buying, and you should be able to enjoy it as if it was its own separate entity.

Now, if you have to read them in order (I know I would), here is the best way to do it.

Christmas Promotion – A Zombie Christmas 2 By Anthony Renfro

Today’s promotion is for A Zombie Christmas 2, with added bonus of an excerpt by author Anthony Renfro.

A boy lost. A family desperate. It’s Christmas in a Zombie Apocalypse and Mike Beem is once again aiming for another Holiday miracle. His goal this year isn’t toys for the kids in the neighborhood. His goal this time is trying to save one small life so another family doesn’t have to suffer the way he suffered. Can Mike save Christmas once again?

Midnight arrived, and the snow reached a fever pitch. It fell down out of the sky at an inch or two an hour, blanketing the world in white.

Mike, Donny, and Lisa hurried through the frozen mess, slipping and sliding down a covered asphalt road toward a shut metal gate. The gate was connected to a metal wall that ran from the left and right, evaporating into the snowy distance in either direction. The wall, as well as the gate, stood at least fifteen feet tall, looming high and shimmery above them as they made their way towards it.

Mike took out a small walkie talkie and spoke into it when they were almost at the gate. “Cuckoo bird has come back to the nest. Three fledglings in tow. Immediate preparations are needed.”

“Copy that cuckoo bird,” a voice replied from out of nowhere, and then a second later the gate slid open, inviting all three of them into a world of safety.

Donny looked left and right, as they moved past burned out houses and cars. Through the darkness, he thought he saw something black moving fast, keeping pace with them. Donny turned back to the front when the black thing disappeared behind a house, and followed Mike into an absolute Utopia.

Once inside, Lisa turned around and watched the dead and decaying world disappear behind a solid gate of silver metal. Attached to the gate was a large green Christmas wreath, sparkling with silver and red tinsel. She turned back to the front, and looked at each home (though hard to see clearly in the snow) decorated in muted decorations. Doors and lawns and roofs all displayed some kind of Christmas cheer, and in the center of this peaceful oasis sat the largest Christmas tree she had ever seen. It was kept upright with wooden spikes and strings, and sitting atop of it was a large yellow star spinning like a lighthouse beacon. She looked from the tree to their path, and saw small bags depicting Christmas scenes lining their way. Inside each bag was a small candle, flickering bright in the snow and cold. She flicked her eyes from the candles to the baby carrier and the baby asleep inside of it, kept warm and safe by Mike’s coat draped over her, thankful Mike had given it up so her baby could rest comfortably.

They reached the Refugee Center that was just behind the massive evergreen. It was a small building with two windows and a door, all decorated with Christmas cheer.

“5 Stars out of 5: I dearly love this author’s short stories, and these 3 were great.”

“Just a second longer,” Mike replied, turning from Fred to face Jim. “Are you still leaving?”

Jim looked out at the parking lot, back to Mike and Fred. He thought of the note he had read back at Mike’s place. That note gave him the courage he needed. “I guess it’s like dancing with an electric chair. You’re never ready, but sometimes you have no choice,” Jim replied, gripping his gun a bit tighter, gearing himself up to go just like Fred.

Mike patted Jim on the shoulder. “Glad you’re back on board. Three is always better than two.”

“So, are we going or are we going to sit here and have a tea party? My toes are cold, my knees are numb, and I’m so hopped up on adrenaline I think I might burst out of my clothes,” Fred replied, eyes big and alive like a junky on a high.

“Okay, we’re going now, follow my lead. And remember, we want these zombies to pack in tight around us so we can get as many as we possibly can at one time. No matter how tight they swarm, no one shoots until I say so. Got that?”

Mike looked at Jim.

He nodded.

Mike looked at Fred.

He gave Mike the thumbs up without looking at him, eyes still focused on the parking lot and the shuffling zombies.

“Let’s do it then. Good luck guys and be safe,” Mike replied, and stepped out of his hiding spot, saying a silent prayer to himself as he did it.

Fred and Jim followed closely behind.

The zombies shuffled about. They were just doing their zombie thing, unaware of the danger lurking nearby.

Mike, Fred, and Jim inched closer to the mall, eyes alive, and guns ready to fire.

The zombies noticed them and began to shuffle in their direction.

The men held their pace – slow and steady, as the zombies started to horde together.

A soft snow was falling.

The ground was turning white.

EXP: The Dragon

“This is too cool,” Pat replied. “Let’s see what else we can ask it. Dragon, what color is the sky?”

“It is blue,” she replied, softly, easily. “Would you want to know why?”

“No,” Doug replied, as he looked at his friend with a bit of anger in his eyes.

“What?”

“We can ask it baby questions all night, but let’s try something tougher? Let’s try something for giggles.”

“Like what?” Pat asked, almost knowing that whatever his friend was going to do was going to be bad. He had a way of getting both of them into trouble. It was his idea, of course, to break into this house.

Doug thought about the question for a moment, staring out the window, staring at the black of night draped all over the lake. Thinking of a question, a real doozy, he turned to face the machine. “Dragon, what is 666?” He asked, smirking like a kid standing in front of a cookie jar.

“That is the number of the beast. Shall I summon it or a demon for you?” Dragon answered with her soft female voice never once raising or lowering her tone.

Pat looked at Doug, and Doug looked at him. Pat saw in his friend’s eyes that dark mischievous look, and before Pat could tell his friend not to do it Doug’s mouth was opening, spilling out this next phrase.

“Sure, Dragon, summon a demon for me. A really nasty one from the deepest pits of Hell,” Doug replied, and laughed.

Pat punched Doug on the arm. “What the hell did you do that for?”

“Just thought it would be funny. Besides, it won’t do it. Machines can’t make things manifest like that. If they could, don’t you think I would have asked for a girl instead?” Doug replied.

“But they’re making these machines smarter these days.”

“So, she can now conjure up a demon out of thin air. Tell me you’re not that stupid.”

“Guess you’re right. That would be impossible,” Pat replied, and looked at the machine.

The machine did not respond to Doug’s command. It just sat there silent and lifeless, almost like it was thinking or pondering something.

“See, told you nothing would happen,” Doug replied, turning away from the machine that was now kind of given him the creeps. He didn’t like the fact that it hadn’t responded with a response that it couldn’t do the requested action. That bothered him for some reason, and he didn’t know why . . .

EXP: The Man from the Road

A fat, yellow, full moon filled the sky. It lit up the world, casting shadows everywhere; but what was that lurking in the shadows? Shapeless things with dark, red, shiny eyes–things that were watching a man, as he walked down a road, alone. This man ignored the shadow creatures the best he could, and tried to figure out where he was, and why he was here. He had no idea of how he had come to be on this road, in such a dead haunted place.

He started to walk forward, and something stopped him, abruptly.

He turned to his left, and across a nearby field he saw an explosive fire licking at the starry sky with a hell-filled red tongue. The fire seemed to taste the evil in the night, and burn brighter because of it.

The man trained his eyes on the fire, as if he was drawn to it by some unseen force; and then he saw them . . .

Excerpt2

Excerpt from Need to Feed:

The house appeared to be silent, but he thought he heard something, something low and almost inaudible coming from one of the bedrooms.

It was a sucking sound, like something feasting.

He made his way towards that sound, boots clicking on the uneven hard wood floor, spurs jingling, hoping he wasn’t right, but pretty sure he was.

He stopped at the door that led into the Master Bedroom, and listened again. Sure enough, the sound he was hearing was coming from this room. He held the holy water vial up, and popped the lid off with his thumb. He aimed his gun forward, and slipped into the room.

The first person he saw was Bob, lying on his back on the floor, and on top of him was a Vampire, fangs sunk into the man’s neck, sucking him dry. The Vampire was so engrossed in his feast that he didn’t hear the sheriff move in behind him.

While this Vampire fed on Bob, the sheriff looked across the room, and sure enough Linda was lying on her back with another Vampire on top of her, fangs sunk into her neck.

The sheriff was surprised to see these two out so late, because night weakened them considerably; it didn’t hurt them or stop them, but it was sunlight that truly gave them strength.
